The Paper Boat Memory series features simple boats of folded paper, drifting in an abstract sea, each one a representation of an event in my life. I began the series with the intention of conveying memories of my childhood in Korea. As children, we would gather at the stream to fold pieces of paper into little ships and race them in the water. In time, the scope of series expanded, moving beyond my childhood. Each composition captures an internal snapshot of a moment in my life. Put together, the boats, in their changing circumstances, tell the story of how life is experienced in all of its emotional complexity. There's frustration, hope, moments of defeat, nervous excitement, and above all: boundless opportunity. As the boats progress through my life, there's a sense of loosening up, relaxing, and relinquishing control. It is my hope that anyone viewing the Paper Boat Memory series can relate to the emotions behind it, regardless of who they are or where they come from.
